Megan McArdle has a pretty moving counter-anecdote regarding the flourishing industries of yesterday. As someone who has spent the last two decades in Pittsburgh, I wholeheartedly agree. The town synonymous with steel and smog has radically transformed (albeit a tad slowly) into a new type of city. We have two world class universities (Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh) and a terrific biotech industry. Yes, the transition is/was hard, but it is extremely doable; and dare I say, necessary?
